MacBook with a 144Hz Monitor, Quest 2 or Nintendo Switch: Check the Connection
A fast external monitor, Quest PCVR and a Nintendo Switch video feed are three different connections. Check your MacBook model, monitor input and exact workflow before buying.

A MacBook Pro built-in ProMotion display is rated up to 120Hz; an external monitor can have a different refresh rate. Apple lists high-refresh external-display modes for particular MacBook Pro chips, but the achievable mode depends on the exact Mac, monitor, resolution, port, cable and any dock. Dell's S3422DWG lists 3440×1440 at up to 144Hz through DisplayPort and 100Hz through HDMI; Samsung's 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 sets separate signal requirements for its full-resolution 240Hz mode. Meta documents Horizon Link PCVR as Windows-only, while Mac-based Quest app development is a different workflow. A Nintendo Switch dock outputs HDMI to a display; a MacBook's HDMI port is for video output, so direct Switch-to-MacBook HDMI is not a display-input path. For capture, check the particular capture device's macOS support and latency before purchase.

For 144Hz, match both ends of the cable
Write down the MacBook year, chip and ports and the monitor's exact model number. Compare Apple's external-display limits at the intended resolution with the monitor's input table. Dell S3422DWG, for example, specifies 144Hz through DisplayPort but 100Hz through HDMI at 3440×1440. A cable or dock can impose a lower limit; do not infer a working 144Hz mode merely because the monitor advertises 144Hz or the laptop has ProMotion.

Odyssey Neo G9 is a family, not one connection setting
Check the Samsung part number and size. Samsung says its 57-inch Neo G9 needs DP 2.1 UHBR13.5+ or HDMI 2.1 FRL12 to reach its full dual-UHD 240Hz mode, with actual support depending on the graphics hardware. Do not carry that result over to another Neo G9 model or promise it on an unspecified MacBook Pro. Verify the exact Mac's output mode and the full cable/dock path first.

Quest 2: Link gaming and Mac development are different
Meta's developer hardware guide labels Meta Horizon Link as Windows-only, while its build-and-run workflow supports Windows or macOS. That means being able to build a Quest app on a Mac does not establish support for PCVR gaming through Horizon Link. If Link gaming is essential, resolve the host-platform requirement before choosing a MacBook; do not assume a faster Pro chip changes software support.

Nintendo Switch video needs an input path
Nintendo documents the dock's HDMI OUT connection to a TV or monitor. Apple documents a Mac's HDMI or Thunderbolt ports for connecting an external display to the Mac. Therefore, plugging the Switch dock directly into a MacBook HDMI port will not use its built-in screen as an HDMI display. If the goal is recording or viewing through macOS, identify a capture device that explicitly supports the exact Mac, macOS version and signal, then check latency; a TV or monitor is the simpler direct-display route.
