Read the A-number on the device
In Settings > General > About, the Model Number field first shows a part number. Tap it to reveal the A-number, such as A3357, then compare it with Apple’s Identify your iPad model page. Ask a seller for the exact A-number and storage shown on the device, not just a box title or an informal “generation” label. Region-specific Cellular A-numbers are included in the decision list below.

M5 and M4 use chip names, not the older numbered sequence
Apple identifies the 2025 M5 and 2024 M4 by chip name, rather than calling them a fifth and sixth generation. Both list 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, with an Ultra Retina XDR Tandem OLED display at 2420 × 1668 pixels. That shared size and storage range cannot identify which chip is inside. Verify the A-number and exact listing before comparing features, accessories or a live price.

A 128GB or 64GB label changes the generation
Apple lists 128GB for the 2020 second, 2021 third and 2022 fourth generation 11-inch Pro, but not for the 2024 M4 or 2025 M5. Apple lists 64GB for the original 2018 11-inch Pro, which did not have an ordinal generation in its model listing. Do not treat “iPad Pro 11 128” or “Pro 11 64” as a current M5 variant; confirm the exact A-number, year and condition.

Check SIM design before buying Cellular
Apple lists the M5 and M4 Cellular models as eSIM-only, with no physical nano-SIM tray. Its model guide shows a nano-SIM tray on the older 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Cellular models. A tray is a useful clue, not proof of carrier compatibility or the exact generation; verify the A-number and ask the carrier about the intended plan for that device.
